Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, an ally of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and former Clinton Foundation board member, reportedly gave nearly $500,000 in donations to the spouse of an FBI official while she ran for political office, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

McAuliffe’s PAC donated $475,000 last year to the state Senate campaign of Dr. Jill McCabe, the wife of Andrew McCabe, who then oversaw Clinton’s email investigation and would become deputy director of the FBI.

The state Democratic Party, over which McAuliffe has considerable influence, gave McCabe an additional $207,788.

McCabe ultimately lost the election to incumbent Republican Dick Black, and McAuliffe failed in his efforts to win a Democratic majority in the Virginia legislature.

The issue immediately became a talking point for Republican nominee Donald Trump, who has repeatedly argued that Clinton avoided prosecution over her use of a private email server when she was secretary of state because of a “rigged” system.

Trump sent out a tweet with a link to the story Sunday night.
