Italian police today seized $6 trillion in phony 1934 U.S. bonds that had been kept in bogus Federal Reserve security boxes in Switzerland, according to news reports. Eight people were arrested in Italy.
The alleged Mafia scam at one point sought to buy plutonium on the black market, police said.
The bonds, fantastically denominated in millions and billions of dollars, were in three chests intercepted five years ago en route to Zurich from Hong Kong, the Italian news agency ANSA reports. They had been in custody, but prosecutors in Potenza today ordered them seized as part of an investigation of organized loan-sharking in southern Italy.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said that $100,000 was the largest denomination in 1934 and that such bonds were used only for transactions between the Fed and its district banks, AFP says.
Each chest had “Federal Reserve System” and “Chicago” painted on its exterior. Along with the funny money were a lead tube containing a copy of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, and thousands of blank sheets of paper, according to ANSA.
The crooks may have planned to try to swindle investors in emerging economies or dupe unsavvy “mainstream” brokers.
As for the nuclear intrigue, police said wiretaps captured the suspects discussing buying plutonium from Nigeria, but the deal never happened.
The first break in the case came in September 2010 in Rome, where police seized $500 million in bogus bonds in the home of one suspect.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is not aware of any currency or debt stockpile of large denomination Federal Reserve notes from the 1930s and warns that any institution that pays out on such a claim does so at its own risk.It should also be noted that the largest denomination of currency ever printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing was the $100,000 Series 1934 Gold Certificate featuring the portrait of President Wilson. These notes were printed from December 18, 1934, through January 9, 1935, and were issued by the Treasurer of the United States to Federal Reserve Banks only against an equal amount of gold bullion held by the Treasury Department.
